24/06/81: For Your Eyes Only première in London

On Wednesday 24 June 1981 the Royal World Premiere of the latest James Bond film “For Your Eyes Only” was held at the Odeon Leicester Square Theatre in London.



The première was attended by Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

22/05/81: Prince Charles and Lady Di visit Tetbury, Gloucestershire

On Friday 22 May 1981 Price Charles and Lady Diana visited tetbury in Gloucestershire where the Prince opened a new operating theatre.



The visit was publicised a "meeting the neighbours" as the town is less than a mile from Highgrove House, a residence which prince Charles had recently acquired as the couple's home
Highgrove was initially occupied at weekends by Charles and Diana after their 1981 marriage, and their two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, spent much of their childhoods at the house.

15/5/81: Zara Philips born

On Friday 15 May 1981 Zara Philips, second child and only daughter of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Philips, was born at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington London.

Although Zara holds no royal title she is 16th in line to the throne. She has become a successful equestrian and married rugby player Mike Tindall in 2011. They have one daughter, born in 2014.

03/05/81: Lady Diana flies to Aberdeen

On Sunday 3 May 1981 Lady Diana Spencer flew from London to Aberdeen to meet up with her finacé Prince Charles after his 5 week overseas tour. He returned to Britain on May 3, in a RAF VC10, landing at Lossiemouth in Scotland and drove to Balmoral where Lady Diana was waiting for him.

18/4/81: Princess Grace of Monaco on Desert Island Discs

On Saturday 18 April 1981, Princess Grace of Monaco (née Grace Kelly, 1929), on the occasion of her 25th wedding anniversary, was the guest on Roy Plomley's radio programme Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio Four.


Princess Grace chose the eight records she would take to a desert island as well as choosing two pillows as a luxury object and the plays of her uncle George Kelly. Her favourite piece of music was Chopin's Berceuse in D flat major, Op. 57.




Grace Kelly died in September 1982 after suffering a stroke while driving her car.

9/3/81: Charles & Diana's first official night out

On the vening of Monday 9th March 1981, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, now engaged to be married, attended a charity concert at the Goldsmith's Hall in London.



The couple were greeted by hoards of paparazzi photographers eager to get pictures of Diana in her 'little black dress'.

3/3/81: Charles & Di's night at the opera

On Tuesday 3 March 1981 it was announced that the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer would take place at St Paul's Cathedral on 29 July. That evening, the couple attended the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London for a performance of "L'Africane."

24/2/81: Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer wedding announcement

On Tuesday 24 February 1981 the engagement of Prince Charles to Lady Diana was made official in an announcement by Buckingham Palace. 

The Lord Chancellor Lord Maclean made the following statement :

"It is with greatest pleasure that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the Earl Spencer and the Honourable Mrs Shand Kydd."





Prince Charles quipped that he was "delighted and frankly amazed that Diana is prepared to take me on", quipped Prince Charles, 32, while Diana shyly stated, "with Prince Charles beside me I cannot go wrong." Diana was 19 years old at the time.

17/2/81: Queen demands answer from Diana

On Tuesday February 17 the Daily Mirror published an "exclusive" front page story on Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, who had returned from a holiday in Australia. The Queen was said to have pressured her son into getting an answer from Diana after his marriage proposal earlier in the month.



Also on this day: actor Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt (below) and Paris Hilton, grand-daughter of American hotelier Conrad Hilton were born.

6/2/81: Prince Charles proposes to Lady Diana Spencer

On Friday 6 February, Prince Charles allegedly made his marriage proposal to Lady Diana Spencer.



The proposal is said to have taken place in the so-called nursery at Windsor Castle. The Prince told Diana that how much he had missed here while he had been away in the Alps and asked he if she would marry him. Diana left for a pre-arranged holiday in Australia a few days later.

19/1/81: Lady Diana Spencer


On the morning of Monday 19th January Lady Diana Spencer is photographed returning to the kindergarten school where she worked in Pimlico, London. She had allegedly just returned from a weekend at the royal residence in Sandringham. Speculation over her relationship with Prince Charles, and a possible engagement, had been growing since the autumn of 1980.
