23/05/81: Donald and Ivana Trump
On Saturday 23 May 1981, Donald Trump and wife Ivana are photographed as they attend the wedding ceremony of John Kluge and Patricia Gay at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.

The Trumps had themselves married in 1977 in a lavish society wedding, and became leading figures in New York society during the 1980s. They both worked on several massive projects, including the construction of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The couple had three children: Donald John Jr. (b. 1977), Ivanka Marie (b. 1981), and Eric Fredrick (b. 1984).
Their divorce was settled in 1992.

22/05/81: Prince Charles and Lady Di visit Tetbury, Gloucestershire
On Friday 22 May 1981 Price Charles and Lady Diana visited tetbury in Gloucestershire where the Prince opened a new operating theatre.
The visit was publicised a "meeting the neighbours" as the town is less than a mile from Highgrove House, a residence which prince Charles had recently acquired as the couple's home
Highgrove was initially occupied at weekends by Charles and Diana after their 1981 marriage, and their two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, spent much of their childhoods at the house.

21/05/81: Francois Mitterand sworn in as French President
On Thursday 21 May 1981 Francois Mitterand (1916 -1996) was sworn in as President of the French Republic (Président de la République française). He had been elected on the previous 10th May winning 51.76% of the votes, ousting the former president Valéry Giscard D'Estaing.
Mitterand was the first Socialist President of the Fifth French Republic and remained in office until 1995 after being re-elected for a second term in 1988.
He died from prostrate cancer at the age of 79.

13/05/81: Assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II
On Wednesday 13 May 1981 an attempt to assassinate Pope John Paul II was made in St Peter's Square in Vatican City.
The Pope was shot and wounded by Mehmet Ali Ağca while he was entering the square at around 5.17 pm. The Pope was struck four times, and suffered severe blood loss. Ağca was apprehended immediately, and later sentenced to life in prison by an Italian court.
The Pope later forgave Ağca for the assassination attempt. He was pardoned by Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi at the Pope's request and was deported to Turkey in June 2000.

11/05/81: Bob Marley dies
On Monday 11 May 1981 musician and songwriter Bob Marley (b. Robert Nesta Marley, 1945) died at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, USA. He was 36 years old.
Marley had been receiving treatment for cancer in a clinic in Germany since September 1980, but had decided to return home to Jamaica as the treatment had been without success after eight months. The plane taking him back was forced to land in Miami for hospital treatment as his condition drastically worsened.
Marley is now considered one of the most influential musicians of all time and is credited with popularizing reggae music worldwide, and for serving as a symbol of Jamaican culture and identity.

On Tuesday 5 may 1981 Bobby Sands died in Maze Prison hospital after 66 days on hunger strike. He was 27.

03/05/81: Lady Diana flies to Aberdeen
On Sunday 3 May 1981 Lady Diana Spencer flew from London to Aberdeen to meet up with her finacé Prince Charles after his 5 week overseas tour. He returned to Britain on May 3, in a RAF VC10, landing at Lossiemouth in Scotland and drove to Balmoral where Lady Diana was waiting for him.

20/04/81: Teachta Dail visit Bobby Sands
On Easter Monday, 20 April, 1981 Three Irish Teachta Dáil (members of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of Oireachtas, the Irish Parliament) together with Owen Carron, then Bobby Sands’ election agent, paid a visit to Sands at Maze Prison. Following the meeting the Teachta Dáil called for urgent talks with the British government. Sands had been on hunger strike since March 1st, and subsequently elected to the UK Parliament in the Fermanagh / South Tyrone by-election on 9 April.
The British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher announced on 21 April that the British government would not meet the Teachta Dáil. "We are not prepared to consider special category status for certain groups of people serving sentences for crime. Crime is crime is crime, it is not political," she stated.

18/4/81: Princess Grace of Monaco on Desert Island Discs
On Saturday 18 April 1981, Princess Grace of Monaco (née Grace Kelly, 1929), on the occasion of her 25th wedding anniversary, was the guest on Roy Plomley's radio programme Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio Four.
Grace Kelly died in September 1982 after suffering a stroke while driving her car.

30/3/81: Ronald Reagan assasination attempt
On Monday 30 March 1981 an assassination attempt was made on the US President Ronald Reagan.
John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to shoot Reagan outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C., at around 2.27 PM local time, just after the president had addressed the Building and Construction Workers Union of the AFL-CIO. Hinckley was armed with a .22 revolver with exploding bullets and was only ten feet away from Reagan when he began shooting. Hinckley’s first shot hit press secretary James Brady and other shots wounded a police officer Thomas Delahanty and a Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy. The sixth and final shot hit Reagan’s limo and then ricocheted into the President’s chest.

Shortly afterwards, Reagan was subjected to an emergency thoracotomy lasting 105 minutes. He came close to death losing over half of his blood volume in the emergency room and during surgery to remove the bullet. He left the hospital thirteen days later.

James Brady became permanently disabled from his gunshot wound and became an ardent supporter of gun control as a result of this event. He died on August 4, 2014, 33 years after the shooting. His death was ruled a homicide, caused by the gunshot.
At his trial in 1982, in Washington, D.C., charged with 13 offenses, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity on June 21, and has since remained under constant institutional psychiatric care.

26/3/81: Social Democratic Party (SDP) founded in UK
On Thursday 26 March 1981 the Social Democrats launched their new political party in the UK pledging to "reconcile the nation" and "heal divisions between classes".
The party was founded by the so-called 'Gang of Four', the four Labour Party defectors Roy Jenkins, David Owen, William Rodgers and Shirley Williams.
The SDP went on to form the SDP–Liberal Alliance with the Liberal Party in June 1981, under the joint leadership of Roy Jenkins and Liberal leader David Steel.

24/3/81: Ronnie Biggs rescued after kidnap
On Tuesday 24 March 1981 Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs was rescued by Barbados police following his kidnapping. The 52-year-old, on the run from UK police, was found on a yacht which had broken down seven miles from the coast of Barbados.
Biggs was taken from a bar in Rio de Janeiro on 18 March where he was due to meet some new friends. The men turned up and bundled Biggs into a waiting car. From there it is believed they took him by plane to the coast where they boarded a yacht bound for Barbados. The kidnap was thought to be an attempt to get Mr Biggs extradited to serve the rest of his sentence in the UK.
Biggs had been on the run since 1965 when he escaped form Wandsworth Prison in the UK, where he was serving a thirty year sentence after The Great Train Robbery of 1963.

23/3/81: Mike Hailwood dies in a road accident
On Monday 23 March 1981, British motor-cycle racer Mike Hailwood died following a road traffic accident in Warwickshire, England.
Born Stanley Michael Bailey Hailwood in 1940, he was also known as "Mike The Bike" because of his natural riding ability on bikes with a range of engine capacities. Later in his career he went on to compete in Formula One and other classes of car racing, becoming one of the few men to compete at Grand Prix level in both motorcycle and car racing.
The fatal accident had occurred two days earlier when Hailwood was driving with his two young children Micehlle and David. Michelle died instantly, and of the three only David survived. At his funeral Hailwood's pall bearers included James Hunt, John Surtees and Giacomo Agostini.

22/3/81: Soyuz 39 lanched into space
On Sunday 22 March 1981 the Soyuz 39 manned space flight was launched into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, formerly of the Soviet Union.
The mission was notable for the fact that, it carried the first Mongolian cosmonaut, Jügderdemidiin Gürragchaa (b. 1947, pictured above right), as well as the Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Aleksandrovich Dzhanibekov (left), making it part of the Soviet Interkosmos space program.

On 16 March 1981, Time magazine featured the US Secretary of State Alexander Haig on its front cover.
Haig (b. 1927) was a veteran of both the Korean and the Vietnam wars and had served as NATO Supreme Commander from 1974–79. His term in office under Ronald Reagan was relatively short and his comments and actions often met with controversy both at home and abroad. He resigned from his post in June 1982. His memoirs, Inner Circles: How America Changed The World, were published in 1992. Haig died in 2010.

OnSaturday 14 March 1981 Michael LeMoyne Kennedy married Ms. Victoria Gifford in New York City.

Michael L. Kennedy was the nephew of former American President, John F Kennedy, assassinated in 1963, and the sixth child of Robert F. Kennedy, also assassinated in 1968.
Michael died in 1997 after a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado. That same year he had been accused of (but not charged with) statutory rape, and had separated from Victoria.
